What I learned today

What I learned today.

Well it wasn’t something new but it did hit a little less hard than the hotshot wielded by a 14 year old. I learned that people are sometimes, silly, rude, unintelligent and well sometimes plain stupid. And that’s when their enlightened, we won’t talk about the other times as it’s not always nice to use those kinds of words in mixed company. Now I’m not proclaiming to be intelligent, smart or even have a lick of common sense, but common folks give me a break!

I figured rodeo committees are made up of three kinds of folks. The Cranium Bones, these are the ones who are pretty smart but no one pays attention to a word they say because, well they just don’t like to get their hands dirty. The Jaw Bones, these folks know everything, have done everything and aren’t afraid to tell you twice about it. They have everyone who don’t know any better convinced that it really was yea wide |--------------| no manure! Then there are the backbones. They are the rarest bird in the nest because they don’t get a say or a thought in edge wise but they sure do get all of the work done! So why did I finally spell this predicament out in my mind. Well I heard some stuff today that made me realize everyone is stuck back about 20 years ago when they were 18-25.

Hey boys and girls no lie; just because you build it doesn’t mean they’ll come. Heck with the Xbox 360, MySpace.com and 100 other activities for the youth of today why do you think they’d come to your Podunk event? And that’s the competitors not just the fans!

So you want to know what I think it takes to put a shindig on. Well besides money how about lots of hard work! You like drinking them Cappuccinos double latte vanilla mocha Grande whatever’s, sure great while your putting up 30 flyers before you get to work at 8am! Your arena painted, clean with plenty of good seating and lights? No, well why are you having a whooper at noon and not picking up the paint? Are your facilities safe and hospitable for both the four legged and two legged beast? Well why not, you think finding something that will work as a water trough is hard?

So what do you deserve if you’re putting on a rodeo? NOTHING, until the entire group of professional rodeo hands signed their contracts. NOTHING, until all of the lights hanging on the light post work like they should. NOTHING, until all of the chutes and gates swing like they are supposed to swing. NOTHING, until 100 posters are hung and 10 advertisements are placed in the papers. Hope ya get the point!

New Mexico Takes Rodeo Seriously Part II

The New Mexico Rodeo Council a body setup by Governor Bill Richardson D-NM to enhance the sport of rodeo in the state of New Mexico and the New Mexico Activities Association announced this past month that effective next school year Rodeo will be an official High School Sport. This means in New Mexico you can now letter in Rodeo! The one thing the two bodies are currently working on is the issue of home schooled kids. Though the New Mexico Rodeo Council was certain it would be resolved before next years rodeo season begins.

Paying to Play

After reading some sports but non-rodeo news, I was wondering who would be willing to pay to play? No I don't mean you get a check if you win, I mean you pay Joe Schmoo for the privilage of getting on the bull or roping the calf! No not at a practice pen either but lets say in from of 10,000 fans! So would you be willing to pay?

Ah here is the kicker. Did you know that there are people in rodeo who are willing to pay to play in order JUST to get their name out there OR worse because they don't need the money! Now you're probably saying to yourself what kind of idiot would do that. Well to me the idiots or gunsells aren't riders (but that is happening) but they are the "Professionals" who make the sport work. There are Announcers, Pickup Men, Bullfighters and yes even us lowly Photographers who are stupid enough to PAY to work a rodeo! So lets figure this out, hmm Doctors are professionals, have you ever gotten a no charge on a Doctors bill without insurance? And Lawyers are free, bet you couldn't count the number of times a lawyer has worked for free on one hand! Professional Athletes work for free right, woops nope they work for about $100,000 or more per game. So what professional works for free?

In fact it has gotten so bad that people now EXPECT these rodeo "professionals" to pay to work their events. So as a photographer you expect me to pay you for the privilage of shooting your event? And you expect to deal with a professional? Sure I'll pay you whatever you ask, ahh but here is the kicker, the photo you want to advertise your event now cost $5,000 per single use. Oh and what about the Professional Bullfighter you had pay you to work your event, do you expect him to be good enough at entertaining to keep your crowd into the event? Do you expect him to be good enough to keep serious harm from coming to riders? Have you ever known judges who got paid a six pack of beer and a cheese burger and you left wondering where they got these jokers from?

Ladies and Gentlemen, Professionals except on rare occasions are never free! So the next time you hear of a big event and they say they got their help for free, wonder this, how bad is it going to be?
