Article III – Remember regular oil changes can extend the life of your vehicle. But don’t forget to change those filters when you change the oil. Your air filter can help you increase your mileage while your oil filter can increase the life of your engine.

Breeders’ information, for those who love the four legged athletes as much as the two legged ones. Brought to you by http://www.maverickrodeo.com – growing our own for over 30 years.

Article IV – Remember your bucking animals are athletes. When you feed them do not ration them like you would a feed lot calf but give them the feed requirements needed to perform at the top of their game. We recommend getting with your feed dealer and finding the right rations for these world class athletes to perform at world class levels. Also, remember this time of year it is very important to keep the access to water free of ice and other foreign objects like tree limbs.

Weather Brief – The southwest finally got some moisture, but not nearly enough. Remember while traveling to stay tuned to local radio stations for more information on road conditions.

>>Brought to you by Double P Tack, your rodeo store since 1994.

Article I – We would like to congratulate all of the champions at the IPRA finals that just ended in Oklahoma City, OK.

Article II – The Greg Crabtree auction ends this Wednesday. If you would like to bid on any of the items please visit The PBR and click on the link. I only worked the arena once with Greg. It was at the Amarillo, TX Classic event. And I can tell you there is good reason people speak so highly of him! It was the first PBR event I ever worked and even though I’m a photographer he spoke to me and made a few jokes with me. His untimely death is a tragedy and what’s even worse is his leaving behind a wife and young family! I would hope those who have the extra money could find a way to bid on the many items they have up for auction!

Article IV – Electronic ID Mouthing Instructions

As you may have heard, beginning with the ’04 calf crop, the 2 year old competing bulls in 2006 will be required to have been aged by one of the ABBI certified veterinarians, prior to 34 months of age, and/or prior to competing at their first event. Upon being examined by one of the certified veterinarians, an electronic ID tag will be applied, and the information on that calf will be stored electronically, and may be retrieved at any time by passing a wand by the bull’s head, without the need of a chute.
The process will be new to some of us and therefore a little confusing,
But it’s not that complicated, and we’ll walk you through it:

Step 1. Notify your nearest certified ABBI veterinarian of your intended day and number of head to be mouthed. If you don’t already have one, we recommend getting a premise ID number from your state agriculture office.
Your veterinarian will have contact numbers or websites to assist you. This number will be required by the USDA sometime in the next year or so on cattle that move across state lines. If you need to go ahead and mouth your calves, before you get your number, you can contact us when your premise number is assigned and we can add it to your calves’ information at that time.

Step 2. Have the calves examined and the EID tag will be applied. The veterinarian will fill out the information card that corresponds to each individual calf, and that data will be stored electronically at XID Technologies. Your veterinarian will collect from you the $10.00 per head (payable to ABBI) that will cover the cost of the tag and the data storage, and of course what ever he charges for the mouthing of the animals.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but we feel it is the best way available to us to ensure the credibility of our aging process. And it eliminates the need to ever look in that calf’s mouth at the events. Not to mention the fact that the USDA will soon require the EID tag on cattle that cross state lines. I’m sure there will be some confusion as we all learn the best way to implement the system, but we will be available to work with you through what ever questions may arise.

The partial list of certified veterinarians is posted below, it is our objective to have vets certified in every region of the country, if you live in an area where none have been designated, please contact me at the office, and we’ll see if there are enough breeders in your area, and a veterinarian with adequate reputation and facilities who is willing to serve your region.

Thank you,

Joe Merrick

Chris Shivers goes over $3,000,000.00

Congratulations to PBR Champion Chris Shivers. Not only has he won two PBR Championships but he is the first competitor in any rodeo event at any level to exceed the $3,032,396.00 mark! As it appears now him and Adriano might be slugging it out for a championship at the end of this year. So Chris has the opportunity to go over 4 million and he has some great competition that can push him.

There is currently an online auction to support the family of bullfighter Greg Crabtree. Greg leaves behind a wife and three young children. I got to interact with him while I was shooting pictures at the Amarillo Classic event and it was easy to see why so many people spoke so highly of Greg. So if you can please help!

Behind the Bull on TLC

So what was everyone’s take on the “Behind the Bull” series on TLC last night? I thought it was pretty good, now I know lots of people didn’t like all the bleeps for the cussing but sometimes that’s just the way it is. So will everyone finish watching the series? I know I will try. Do many of you think this should become a yearly show? Highlight different riders each year?

One I’d like to see is that Brazilian TV was doing a similar show on Ednei; I wonder how it turned out. I’d like to see the highlights of it, dubbed in English of course.

New Mexico Takes Rodeo Seriously

New Mexico takes the sport of Rodeo Seriously

Governor: $777K to promote rodeo in New Mexico

Last Update: 12/30/2005 9:26:17 AMBy: Associated Press

SANTA FE (AP) - Governor Richardson says he will distribute $777,000 to projects throughout the state aimed at promoting participation and attendance at rodeo events.
The funding will go toward improving infrastructure at rodeo event centers, boosting 4-H rodeo programs and promoting college rodeo programs.
The state will also fund New Mexico’s first collegiate rodeo finals. New Mexico’s five higher education institutions with rodeo programs can compete for a state title.
Richardson says rodeo is a vibrant part of New Mexico’s cultural history and the state’s investment will help get more people involved.

(Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

New Mexico Governor sets up a council to help enhance rodeo in New Mexico. http://www.newmexicorodeo.com/

Here is the Council's marching order:

A message from Governor Bill Richardson:

"As Governor, I am committed to moving New Mexico forward by enhancing rodeo programs and increasing opportunities for all New Mexicans. I recognize the significant economic impact that rodeo has on communities throughout the state. I created the New Mexico Rodeo Council to help develop rodeo athletes at the 4-H, junior high, high school, college and professional levels. With your support and involvement we can once again make New Mexico a national leader in rodeo."

The word is that Clayton, NM has already looked into a grant provided by the council in order to lure the New Mexico Rodeo Association Finals away from Las Vegas, NM. (point of history, Clayton, NM was the first place the world finals steer roping was held)
