Article I – We would like to congratulate all of the champions at the IPRA finals that just ended in Oklahoma City, OK.
Article II – The Greg Crabtree auction ends this Wednesday. If you would like to bid on any of the items please visit
The PBR and click on the link. I only worked the arena once with Greg. It was at the Amarillo, TX Classic event. And I can tell you there is good reason people speak so highly of him! It was the first PBR event I ever worked and even though I’m a photographer he spoke to me and made a few jokes with me. His untimely death is a tragedy and what’s even worse is his leaving behind a wife and young family! I would hope those who have the extra money could find a way to bid on the many items they have up for auction!

Article IV – Electronic ID Mouthing Instructions
As you may have heard, beginning with the ’04 calf crop, the 2 year old competing bulls in 2006 will be required to have been aged by one of the ABBI certified veterinarians, prior to 34 months of age, and/or prior to competing at their first event. Upon being examined by one of the certified veterinarians, an electronic ID tag will be applied, and the information on that calf will be stored electronically, and may be retrieved at any time by passing a wand by the bull’s head, without the need of a chute.
The process will be new to some of us and therefore a little confusing,
But it’s not that complicated, and we’ll walk you through it:
Step 1. Notify your nearest certified ABBI veterinarian of your intended day and number of head to be mouthed. If you don’t already have one, we recommend getting a premise ID number from your state agriculture office.
Your veterinarian will have contact numbers or websites to assist you. This number will be required by the USDA sometime in the next year or so on cattle that move across state lines. If you need to go ahead and mouth your calves, before you get your number, you can contact us when your premise number is assigned and we can add it to your calves’ information at that time.
Step 2. Have the calves examined and the EID tag will be applied. The veterinarian will fill out the information card that corresponds to each individual calf, and that data will be stored electronically at XID Technologies. Your veterinarian will collect from you the $10.00 per head (payable to ABBI) that will cover the cost of the tag and the data storage, and of course what ever he charges for the mouthing of the animals.
We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you, but we feel it is the best way available to us to ensure the credibility of our aging process. And it eliminates the need to ever look in that calf’s mouth at the events. Not to mention the fact that the USDA will soon require the EID tag on cattle that cross state lines. I’m sure there will be some confusion as we all learn the best way to implement the system, but we will be available to work with you through what ever questions may arise.
The partial list of certified veterinarians is posted below, it is our objective to have vets certified in every region of the country, if you live in an area where none have been designated, please contact me at the office, and we’ll see if there are enough breeders in your area, and a veterinarian with adequate reputation and facilities who is willing to serve your region.
Thank you,
Joe Merrick
